Body modification (also known as body alteration or sometimes shortened to body mod) is the act of purposely alterating the human body for non-medical reasons (such as sexual enhancement, a rite of passage, aesthetic reasons, denoting affiliation, trust and loyalty, religious reasons, shock value, and self-expression.) Body modification ranges from socially acceptable mods, such as pierced ears which are extreamely common throughout society, to “extreme” modification such as stretching a piercing or scarification. Extreme modifications are quiet controversial within some societies, but popularity over the last few years is on the rise.
